Zinc oxide nanoparticles
Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO nanoparticles, ZnONPs) are nanoscale forms of zinc oxide investigated as chemical and bioactive materials.
Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO nanoparticles, ZnONPs) are nanoscale forms of zinc oxide investigated as chemical and bioactive materials. The supplied literature places them at the intersection of nanomaterial characterization and biological research, including antibacterial activity, anticancer activity, wound healing, antiparasitic applications, and environmental or therapeutic safety assessment. Studies commonly examine their physicochemical properties alongside biological endpoints such as cytotoxicity, biocompatibility, antioxidant activity, reactive oxygen species, and microbial inhibition.
A major focus of the recent literature is “green” or biological synthesis, in which plant extracts or other biological materials are used during nanoparticle production. The resulting materials are evaluated using approaches that may include UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential analysis, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. In biological systems, ZnO nanoparticles have been studied against organisms including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Eimeria papillata. Their reported research uses also include delivery systems, infection models, cancer-cell studies, and investigations of oxidative-stress-related toxicity.

Green ZnO Bioactivity
Plant extracts and fruit waste are driving low-cost ZnO synthesis aimed at multifunctional biological and environmental use. Antimicrobial activity against multidrug-resistant Klebsiella and other pathogens recurs alongside cytotoxicity in MCF-7 and HepG2 cells. Photocatalytic degradation and antioxidant effects broaden applications beyond medicine. Acute toxicity in silver pompano and repeated FTIR, XRD, EDS, FESEM and TEM characterization keep safety and physicochemical consistency unresolved.

Biofunctional ZnO Applications
Green synthesis is being optimized toward low-toxicity, multifunctional ZnO, especially with pomegranate peel or husk extracts. Reported activities include antioxidant and enzyme inhibition, photocatalysis, supercapacitor performance, anti-inflammatory protection from tissue injury, and anticoccidial efficacy. Frankenia hirsuta work links these effects to inflammatory signaling involving Tnf and Mapk3, with glutathione also recurring. The breadth of endpoints supports application screening more than a single established therapeutic direction.

ZnO Toxicity and Antimicrobial Effects
ZnO research is splitting between defining injury mechanisms and packaging ZnO for antimicrobial treatment. Neurotoxicity is linked to NCOA4-dependent ferritinophagy, iron overload and ferroptosis, while BECN1-mediated autophagy appears protective in acute lung injury. PEGylated niosomes co-loaded with nisin improve activity against VRSA and ceftazidime-resistant bacteria, including biofilms. Diabetic wound healing adds a therapeutic endpoint, but the balance between ROS-driven toxicity and antimicrobial benefit remains open.
