Oxygen is a chemical element commonly present as molecular oxygen (O₂), a key participant in oxidation–reduction reactions and in biological responses to oxygen availability. In biomedical research, oxygen is considered both a substrate for oxygen-reduction reactions and a determinant of tissue and cellular conditions: insufficient oxygen is associated with hypoxia, whereas oxygen-linked reactive oxygen species and hydrogen peroxide can contribute to oxidative stress, inflammation, and cellular injury. These mechanisms connect oxygen with wound healing, antimicrobial activity, cell viability, and respiratory physiology.
Current biomedical applications include oxygen-delivery biomaterials, such as oxygen-enriched adipose-derived stem-cell exosome nanobubbles and multifunctional hydrogels designed to sustain O₂ under hypoxic conditions. Oxygen is also studied as dissolved oxygen in fermentation and electrochemical biosensing, as a factor in the oxygen cost of breathing in obesity and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and in long-term oxygen therapy among patients with advanced COPD. Additional work examines oxygen reduction at engineered biocathodes, oxygen-sensitive particle-therapy monitoring, and oxygen-to-sulfur coordination in ruthenium complexes investigated for anticancer activity. These areas extend the broader themes of biomedical oxygen applications, oxygen-linked biochemical engineering, and oxygenated wound healing.

Hypoxia and Inflammatory Injury
Hypoxia, reactive oxygen species, and oxygen demand are being linked to inflammatory injury across tumors, COPD, and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Tumor work contrasts oxygen diffusion in malignant and normal tissue, while COPD findings question whether conventional inflammatory markers capture neutrophilic disease. In older patients with obesity and HFpEF, the oxygen cost of breathing is tied to dyspnea rather than simply inflammation. Oxygen-carrying hydrogels add a regenerative strategy, but the clinical studies remain observational and mechanistically diverse.

Oxygen-Enhanced Wound Healing
Oxygen-delivering biomaterials are being combined with regenerative cells, exosomes, nanobubbles, and antimicrobial treatment to improve full-thickness wound repair. Adipose-derived stem cell exosome nanobubbles target hypoxia while ultrasound-assisted delivery supports re-epithelialization and collagen formation. Plasma-activated Pluronic F-127 hydrogels address infected wounds through antimicrobial activity alongside a supportive healing matrix. Evidence remains preclinical, with wound closure, inflammation, collagen deposition, and epithelialization as the recurring endpoints.

Others — Oxygen-Linked Applied Research
Xylitol fermentation, oxygen and ATP biosensing, Ru(II) anticancer chemistry, and particle-therapy dosimetry do not form a unified research direction. Oxygen or oxidation serves as a context for enzyme activity, molecular electronics, environmental monitoring, or imaging-based dose assessment. The approaches range from biological production to electrochemical sensing and computational analysis. No shared therapeutic or biological endpoint recurs across the group.
