Recombinant zoster vaccine
The recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV), marketed as Shingrix, is a non-live vaccine used to prevent herpes zoster (shingles) in adults.
The recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV), marketed as Shingrix, is a non-live vaccine used to prevent herpes zoster (shingles) in adults. It is based on recombinant herpesvirus glycoprotein E and is intended to stimulate protective immune responses without using a live, replicating virus. Its clinical significance is reflected in studies of immunogenicity, safety, and vaccine uptake among older adults and people with conditions that increase infection risk or alter immune function.
RZV has been evaluated in people living with HIV across different CD4 T-cell counts, patients receiving active cancer treatment, adults with inflammatory bowel disease, and liver or kidney transplant recipients receiving immunosuppressive therapy. Research also examines antibody responses over time and after revaccination, as well as short-term adverse events following the first and second doses. Implementation studies have addressed initiation and completion of the vaccination series and its prioritization alongside influenza vaccine, pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, and respiratory syncytial virus vaccine.

Zoster Vaccine Safety and Uptake
Safety, immunogenicity, and real-world uptake remain central across older adults and immunocompromised populations. Studies repeatedly assess short-term adverse events after doses 1 and 2, with attention to feasibility during cancer treatment and in inflammatory bowel disease. HIV studies examine CD4 T-cell counts, while transplant cohorts address long-term antibody responses and revaccination. Initiation and completion gaps, alongside country-specific vaccine priorities, remain open implementation questions.
