Bioactive compounds
Bioactive compounds are chemically diverse molecules that produce measurable effects in biological systems.
Bioactive compounds are chemically diverse molecules that produce measurable effects in biological systems. They occur in plant, fungal, algal, and other natural materials and may exhibit antioxidant, antibacterial, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, or tissue-protective activity. Their effects can involve modulation of oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species, the Nrf2 pathway, inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), or interactions with disease-associated proteins. Reported activities are commonly evaluated using assays such as DPPH and ABTS•+ antioxidant tests, antimicrobial inhibition studies, and computational methods including molecular docking and molecular dynamics.
Current biomedical research largely concerns natural-product discovery and the conversion of complex extracts into characterized and reproducible sources of potentially useful molecules. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprinting, chemometric analysis, liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, bioassay-guided isolation, green extraction, fermentation, and design-of-experiments approaches are used to identify, quantify, and optimize these compounds. Network pharmacology and molecular simulations are also used to examine possible multi-target mechanisms in conditions including cancer, skin disorders, and ulcerative colitis. Much of this work remains preclinical, and the potency, composition, standardization, and translation of extract-derived bioactive compounds into defined therapeutic or functional products remain important unresolved issues.

Natural Product Discovery
Plant, fungal, and algal extracts are being advanced from crude remedies toward characterized, reproducible sources of therapeutic and crop-protection molecules. HPLC fingerprints, chemometrics, green extraction, fermentation optimization, and design-of-experiments approaches address composition and production control. Network pharmacology and molecular simulation complement bioassays by linking multi-target compounds to pathways such as Nrf2, while antioxidant, antibacterial, antidiabetic, dermal-repair, and colitis-protective effects recur. The work remains largely preclinical, leaving potency, standardization, and translation to defined products unresolved.
