Silver nanoparticles
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are nanoscale silver materials investigated in biomedical research for antimicrobial and other biological applications.
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are nanoscale silver materials investigated in biomedical research for antimicrobial and other biological applications. Recent studies have examined their biosynthesis using fungal, plant, and mushroom-derived materials, including Fusarium solani, Cymbopogon citratus, Barleria lawii, Pleurotus tuber-regium, and Adenosma caeruleum. Reported investigations include activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Aspergillus fumigatus, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Candida albicans, as well as evaluation of antioxidant properties.
Biomedical applications under investigation include incorporation into alginate–carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogels for wound regeneration, combination with ionic photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy, and use in semen storage to assess bacterial growth and sperm parameters. Other preclinical work has evaluated silver nanoparticles in alloxan-induced diabetes and characterized toxicity according to administration route and sex in mice. These findings place AgNPs within biomedical silver nanotechnology, while emphasizing that biological effects depend on the nanoparticle formulation, combination treatment, exposure route, and experimental model.

Biomedical Uses and Safety
Green and bioinspired synthesis recurs across antimicrobial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antidiabetic, reproductive, and wound-focused applications. Plant, fungal, algal, and bacterial products generate particles or combine them with hydrogels, essential oils, photosensitizers, or extracts. Endpoints include pathogen inhibition, sperm parameters, broiler performance, glucose control, and route- and sex-dependent toxicity. The cluster is broad, with no consistent therapeutic direction or settled safety profile.
Silver nanoparticles are not reliable standalone antimicrobials
The donkey-semen storage study and the PEGDA/gelatin hybrid-hydrogel photodynamic-therapy study independently show that treating silver nanoparticles as sufficient antimicrobial agents fails in different systems. In donkey semen, bactericidal concentrations caused dose- and time-dependent sperm toxicity, reducing motility and membrane integrity while increasing reactive oxygen species; in the hydrogel model, silver nanoparticles alone were insufficient for robust bacterial killing, whereas combining them with light-activated photosensitizers produced marked inactivation of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus 42816940Oct 42155357May. The result is a reversal of the standalone-antimicrobial premise: effective use may require either a compatible delivery context or a complementary antimicrobial mechanism, rather than simply increasing nanoparticle exposure.
